If your AC unit breaks down during peak heat, it’s important to know about the available resources to help you stay safe in an emergency situation.

Weatherization Assistance Program

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps low income families reduce energy costs by making their homes more energy efficient.
How It Helps:

  • Energy Efficiency: The program helps families improve their home efficiency through upgrades like improving insulation, shading sun-exposed windows, implementing air leak control measures, testing and maintaining HVAC equipment, reducing duct leakage, along with other energy saving measures identified by a home energy auditor.
  • Health & Safety: Addresses energy-related health concerns and ensures a safer living environment.
  • Cost Savings: Helps lower utility bills through energy conservation.

Income Eligibility:

Wildfire- Home Energy Assistance Fund

The Home Energy Assistance Fund, helps low-income Arizona families cover the costs of heating and cooling system repairs. How It Helps:

  • Repairs: Funds heating and cooling system repairs

How to Apply:
To find out if you qualify for assistance, use the Arizona Self Help pre-screener for a free confidential screening. Once you’ve determined eligibility, you can apply through one of the local Maricopa County offices.



Maricopa County HVAC Repair and Replacement Fund

The Emergency Home Repair Program helps eligible Maricopa County homeowners by covering repairs for non-functioning heating and cooling systems. This program is subject to funding availability and is designed to help those most at risk.
How It Helps:

  • HVAC Repairs & Replacements: Provides assistance with repairing or replacing non-functioning heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Health & Safety: Prioritizes homes where lack of heat or air conditioning could pose a health or safety risk, especially for elderly, disabled, or young residents.

Eligibility Criteria: To qualify, the following criteria must be met:

  • The household must reside within Maricopa County.
  • At least one of the household members must qualify for Unemployment Insurance or demonstrate financial hardship.
  • The household’s income must be at or below the 80% of the area median income.
  • The household must be at risk of a health or safety crisis due to lack of heat or air conditioning.

How to Apply:
To apply for assistance submit an application on Maricopa County’s Human Services Department Client Portal.
