Your HVAC system is made up of several parts working together to move air, regulate temperature, and keep your home comfortable. The most important parts include:
The HVAC air handler is usually located in a closet, attic, or garage. The air handler contains the blower fan and often the evaporator coil, and it’s responsible for circulating air throughout your space. If you hear someone refer to an AC air handler, it’s essentially the same thing, just a more specific term used when talking strictly about cooling systems.
The evaporator coil is key to making cooling your home possible. It sits inside of the air handler, pulling heat from the air as it passes over the coil. That heat gets carried outside via refrigerant, and then cool air is blown back into your home. If a technician says your AC evaporator coil is dirty or frozen, this is what they are talking about. It’s a critical part, and when it’s not working properly, your AC won’t cool the way it should.
If you’ve got uneven airflow, for example, if one room is freezing while the other one stays on the warmer side your technician may suggest installing or adjusting an HVAC damper. HVAC dampers are small valves inside your ductwork that open or close to control airflow to different parts of the house. Some systems use automatic dampers for zoning (so you are able to control temperatures by areas), while others rely on manual ones to help balance things out. Either way, HVAC dampers can make a big difference in the comfort and efficiency of your home.
An HVAC gauge isn’t part of the system itself, but it’s an important tool for diagnosing potential problems. When your technician checks refrigerant levels or system pressure, they’re using an HVAC gauge to make sure everything is within the right range.
Most homeowners only hear about these components when something goes wrong. Here are a few signs that it is time to get your system checked:
You do not need to be an expert technician to understand the basics of your HVAC system, however, a little extra knowledge can go a long way. Recognizing what key components, like the evaporator coil and AC air handler do can help catch small issues before they become major repairs.
